… is fun. Yesterday I listened to Man, or Astroman? – one of my favorite bands from my high school years. Right now I’m listening to Superchunk, which was also a high school favorite.
Speaking of songs from high school, I was shocked the other day to hear a song from the 6ths as the background for a TV commercial. The song (“Here in my heart” from Wasps’ Nests) is from an obscure album (it’s not available from the iTunes store) by an obscure “artist” – actually a side project (among many) of Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields fame. Anyway, it came out in 1995, right in the heart of my high school years. Ah, the memories.
And, yes, I am deliberately using ellipses in the title/beginning of all of today’s posts.
he is indeed a blogging machine!
like the terminators… like in “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” on fox, which is actually a pretty good show… haha
yesss – i know what you mean 100% about old favorites. yeahhh… good ol’ high school. fantastic. so many things, but food-wise, 99 cent whoppers, 99 cent chalupas at taco bell, long john silver’s in relatively close proximity, gallons and gallons of milk for very low prices… mmmmm…
I played some Superchunk on my radio show this morning. “Fader Rules” from the Lounge Ax Relocation and Defense Fund CD. Good stuff. I’ve also been listening to Seam and Archers of Loaf a fair amount. 90s indie rock!
I think you mean “90’s indie rock, FTW!”
Oh man – So my wife’s car doesn’t have a CD player, and won’t take tape adapters, so I dug out a lot of tapes that you made me in 1996 – Nothing Painted Blue, Superchunk, Rachel’s, Man or Astroman. I need to find those Franklin Bruno/NPB albums on CD.
On eMusic they have “The Monte Carlo Method”, “Placeholders”, Emotional Discipline”, and “The Future of Communication”. Plus, they have an offer that gets you 50 free songs (which you can subsequently cancel before they charge you anything). This would enable you to download all of the above full-length albums and a couple of tracks from “The Future of Communications”.
Finding “Power Trips Down Lovers Lane” is really hard. I ended up finding it used in a now-defunct record store in Belfast (Northern Ireland). Albums before that are similarly hard to find and possibly not worth finding. I have “Logorrhea” on cassette, which I ordered from Shrimper back in the 90s. I probably haven’t listened to it since the ’90s. I’ve never seen their earlier, LP-only release.
eMusic also has a bunch of Franklin Bruno, including stuff released in 2000 and later. The only thing that I have that they don’t is “Etudes for Voice and Snackmaster”, which was released on cassette. I think there are a couple of good tracks on it, but I haven’t listened to it in a long time, since we don’t have a cassette player (other than my 4-track) anymore.
I stand corrected. “Power Trips Down Lovers’ Lane” can be easily found on eBay. I guess it was hard to find in pre-eBay days.
