Excite Truck is, well, exciting

Heather got me the Wii game Excite Truck for Valentine’s Day, but gave it to me yesterday.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with Excite Truck, it is an off-road racing game with trucks.  It also involves a lot of flying through the air since the courses include of a lot of (huge) jumps.  Anyway, Heather gave me the game early because she was concerned that, if she waited until Wednesday to give it to me, I would stay up late playing it and would be exhausted the next day.  Giving it to me yesterday gave me plenty of time to play it before the work week started.  This was a smart move because I played it a lot yesterday.  According to the playing summary on the Wii messageboard, I played it for more than 4 hours.  I finally stopped playing at around 11:45pm, or so.  Yesterday’s experience taught me that I need to allow a long buffer period between stopping playing and going to bed.  This is because I slept very poorly last night.  All night I was plagued by dreams of trucks going off huge jumps and flying through the air.  It was similar to the experience I have had after playing lots of Tetris – an unending stream of Tetris pieces cascading down in my mind.  However, Tetris pieces are at least mildly soporific – not unlike counting sheep, I suppose;  trucks flying off huge jumps, not so much.  So, a warning to anyone considering buying the game: it lives up to its name, so don’t try to play it right before going to bed.

That game is lots of fun. It was my favorite game of the four my brother had (though I never tried out Zelda).

And I empathize with your Tetris nightmares. I, too, have gotten them from Tetris Attack for the SNES. Have you played that game? My friends and I would play that game non-stop in college, and I remember lying in bed at night and seeing combo after combo disappearing from my vision. It was a bit unsettling. Needless to say, I had to limit my hours for fear of being consumed with it.

I’ve never played Tetris Attack. In college, my roommates and I (well, mostly them) played a lot of the original Tetris for the NES. We also played a lot of The New Tetris for the N64. My roommates were incredibly good at the original Tetris. They could start on level 19 (which is the highest level you can start on) and get scores in the vicinity of 500,000, if I remember correctly. This involved getting tetris after tetris while the pieces were dropping at an insane speed. Watching them play is really something to behold. In fact, my roommate, Andrew, took a video art class and simply recorded my other roommate, Mick, playing Tetris as one of his projects. He said everyone was totally captivated watching it. I know I was captivated watching them play.

More recently, Heather got me The New Tetris for my birthday last year. I played that a lot and both of us had the experience of seeing cascading pieces whenever we closed our eyes. Heather said that it got really frustrating for her because whenever she would close her eyes to pray, she saw all these tetris pieces in her mind…

    Agreed, Adrian, you are hilarious.

Did the creators of the Wii have any idea of the can of word-plays that they were opening up?
